Todo list for article: List of Operating Systems

Here are some tasks you can do:
  • Update web trends
  • Remove duplicated "list of common operating systems" which are listed in the timeline.

Contents

article use

This article is intended to focus on Operating system compatibility and popularity. This helps when testing web design and applications across operating systems and browsers. The information useful on this page would be percentage of operating system use (citing sources).

condense

A link to the wikipedia article for more information would be fine, rather than a copy. This article is intended to be more of a list of CURRENT popular operating systems rather than a history of old systems no longer in use. This is specifically for compatability discussion unless there is further purpose to having this much info Aussiepete

Do we really need to have every single OS here? :S
Unnecessary and needs to be condensed. The only important information is to have current OS systems to discuss compatibility issues. Aussiepete
Condensed Tk16
Probably didn't need to quite revert, but I don't think too much more needs to be added really??

links

I've linked all the operatign systems to new pages so they can be expanded over time - it would be good to include any issues that may crop up with using those OS with Jumba hosting. Sean

Operating Systems Listed

This is seriously ridiculous, even though it may be a majority, Windows is being focused on too much, with other operating systems thrown far away to the farside of the sidelines. "* MacOSX * MacOS9 " Is ridiculous. There are about 4 versions of so of Mac OS X in use, all differing. * Linux * Unix is also stupid. Unix? How about breaking it into things like FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, Nexenta etc. Different distros of Linux. They all differ. Windows differs between version, so do these other operating systems between distributions. And since when should these operating systems be classed as OTHER?

If you want to add content for these distros, go ahead! :) The only people so far that are adding these operating systems are either windows or mac users, so they won't be able to write any content for linux distros obviously. Tk16
Mac OS didn't really get a proper mention previously either. I've added a whole lot more, so the focus should be a bit more wide-spread. --Thewebdruid 17:45, 25 July 2006 (EST)
Maybe we can stick with only one Mac OS 10 in general (no 10.1 10.2 etc), otherwise we may as well put Windows XP, Windows XP SP1 and windows XP SP2Tk16
Let's see how much content someone can write for these articles to even begin considering splitting into versions and releases. I say have simply links for more info on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Unix, Solaris OS, BSD OS and discuss important versions or releases on their pages. Aussiepete

new article direction

OK so here it is, let me know if this is a better direction for the article, this feels consie and informative as a good starting point to seeing at aglance where everything sits. For more info on each system (if necessary) are linked to seperate articles. This same timeline format is used for List of browsers. These tables have been made up from arious sources specifically for this wiki. Aussiepete

solaris

solaris is commented out as I don't think it is relevant or popular enough for this article. Aussiepete

Merge June 2007

I have added info to this page from Microsoft_Windows, BSD_OS, Solaris_OS, Linux, Mac_OS and Less_common_OS which are all marked to be merged/deleted --Twz 21:44, 11 June 2007 (EST)

The mentioned pages are now deleted, and all pages linking to them fixed or linked to here --Twz 22:32, 11 June 2007 (EST)
Good job, if more useful information is required for these articles, they can be recreated, but I see no further use of them, they are only really useful to me for seeing the extent and percentage use for web development, otherwise it is borderline useless anyway, especially to have 10 articles dedicated to it.
