Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) provides a standard API for developers to write applications to send standard SQL queries and commands to a database, without being concerned about what type of database is being accessed. Its designers aimed to make ODBC independent of programming languages, database systems, and operating systems.

ODBC implementations run on many operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Unix, Linux, OS/2, and Mac OS X. Hundreds of ODBC drivers exist, including drivers for MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, Pervasive SQL, and desktop database products such as FileMaker, and Microsoft Access. ODBC drivers also exist for non-relational data such as spreadsheets, text and XML files.
