How to create an icon file (ico)

A simple way to create an icon is by creating a single framed GIF and renaming the .gif file to an .ico file type. An icon file can also have many images embedded for different colours and sizes, these can be produced with icon editors.
Online icon generators such as favicon.cc also exist allowing icons to be drawn and then downloaded when completed.
