How to use FTP

This contains a basic outline on how to use FTP to upload files to your website.

To keep this tutorial simple, we will use Filezilla, a free Open Source FTP client.

1. Download and install Filezilla

2. Configure Settings

When you open and launch filezilla, the main screen should load. The screen will look similar to this:


Click the Site Manager icon to open the site manager and create your site.

The Site Manager window will popup, it will look like the image below. Click the new site button.

You will need to enter your connection details here. You should be able to find your connection details within your Jumba Welcome email.

Once you have filled in all your login details, click on the connect button to connect to the server. If you are having issues connecting, it may be worth checking a few things:

  • Your Username, Password and Server Address. Your username and password are case sensitive.
  • You may be behind a firewall that is resticting access. The best way to get around this is to enable Passive FTP. See Below.

3. Connecting and Transferring Files

Once you have connected to the server, your screen will look like this:

On your left will be a list of all the files on your local machine. On your Right, there will be a listing of all the files on the server.

To transfer files, select those that you wish to move and right click. The menu will them allow you to choose to upload or download the selected files. You can also drag and drop files as you wish between the server and you local computer.

4. Passive FTP/Firewalls

If you are behind a firewall, chances are, you will need to use passive mode to connect. Start by opening up the Site Manager again. Select the site that you previously created and click on the transfer settings tab.

Select Passive Mode then click on the OK button.
