new look home page
I've made a start, so please leave your comments. I've cut it back savagely from what is currently there - short and sweet. A lot of the links on the current page look promising, but aren't really that good (yet). The Jumba community and WAG boxes on the current page I think could be moved to a new Jumba Community page --Twz 18:12, 15 June 2007 (EST)
popular pages
Not sure about including a link to Special:Popularpages because some of the best articles are NEW ones with no hits --Twz 18:12, 15 June 2007 (EST)
Formatting
Is this a sample of content and formatting, or just content. Can we play around with some nice looking styles. What I like about the current main page is that it looks at least inviting (besides the masses of text and links that are all too overwhelming). Maybe we could splash around some styles or graphics to spruce it up a little, maybe some Web 2.0 dodgy reflective looking things - but then it might be an issue to keep it fresh. - I like the idea of a graphic or 2 to tart it up, but thought this page shouldn't look too different from the rest of the wiki. And I wanted to avoid complicated tables (hard to edit). I think the important thing is to not overwhelm first time users. Of course have a play with the formatting - this is a community effort as you know -- (currently a community of about 3 people! ;-)) --Twz 00:53, 16 June 2007 (EST)
Not sure
Just playing around with some ideas, I keep reverting back to what's already there. I guess we can cut al lteh styles and tables but essentially keep the main web/hosting/domain topics that are there. There's no need to list Common Settings, Abotu Jumba, Jumba services, Glossary of Terms because these are all in the sidebar anyway... Aussiepete 15:02, 16 June 2007 (EST)
- I do like your concept #3 layout (move Fantastico from web design to hosting?). I don't much like the search page though (especially for newbies) - I'd rather point them to the search box in the nav. How about we make concept 3 the "work in progress" page and get rid of the other two? --Twz 21:14, 16 June 2007 (EST)
- No objections so I've done it! Feel free to revert to the previous edit (Concepts 1,2 and 3) if you disagree --Twz 00:40, 21 June 2007 (EST)
working backwards
I've mad a few minor (major to some) changes to the main page, but think these sorts of changes should come under some consensus or collaboration. I've dumped what's there at the moment which I think is an improvement. My suggestion is to use this and work backwards from what should be added/removed or cleaned up. Aussiepete 23:04, 26 June 2007 (EST)
- I'm certainly liking what is there now more than what was there a few hours ago. Seems to certainly look less cluttered with the 'navigation'/extra links (and colours) down the one column --Scott T 23:11, 26 June 2007 (EST)
- It's looking really good - much neater and less imposing (and another edit conflict!) --Twz 23:11, 26 June 2007 (EST)
Archive this page?
There now seems to be general agreement on the current main page. Should this WAG:Main_Page be moved to the Archive namespace? --Twz 12:45, 29 June 2007 (EST)
- If you feel attached to it or that the discussion is of use you can, otherwise move discussion to the main name space discussion, and possibly move the article to Archive with discussion, or even Main_Page/Alternate but that just complicates things :) Aussiepete 13:38, 29 June 2007 (EST)
- I think this history and discussion should be kept, so I'll move it to Archive. No need to clutter the main namespace discussion - I might just put a link there to this archived article --Twz 13:48, 29 June 2007 (EST)
